Salzburg Festival & Austrian Cultural Forum present: LA TRAVIATA
It was the opera event at the 2005 Salzburg Festival: Willy Decker's version of Verdi's La Traviata featuring the dream team of Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón together with Thomas Hampson was greeted by an extraordinary media hype and can now be relived at the Austrian Cultural Forum Washington.
In Willy Decker's production, the Grim Reaper sits on the side of the stage wearing a black coat and watching how Violetta encounters Alfredo and thus the happiness of her life. It was a belcanto feast: with glamorous Anna Netrebko and her entrancingly dark timbre, with Rolando Villazón and his incredibly flexible, brilliant voice, and with the powerful Thomas Hampson as the moralising Germont, cruelly destroying the lovers' paradise with a trombone-like boom when he comes to visit.
