Salzburg Festival & Austrian Cultural Forum present: Der Rosenkavalier

Harry Kupfer was responsible for this new production of Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The opera had its first performance in 1911, only a few years before the outbreak of World War I. However, in contrast to the prevalent cliché about this masterwork, this comedy of manners cannot be dismissed as backwards or reactionary. Despite the nostalgic setting in 18th-century Vienna, this opera is about a serious of current issues, for example the role and standing of women or the breakdown of the moral and financial circumstances determining our lives. Another central theme is transience, for the opera is drenched in the feeling that time is running out – at least for this aristocratic society. History proved that this was indeed the case.
