Salzburg Festival & Austrian Cultural Forum present: Don Giovanni
In his reflections on his new production of Mozart´s dramma giocoso, director Sven-Eric Bechtolf writes: "In our relatively taboo-free and shame-less times, in which the enlightenment formerly so direly needed has been degraded to profitable obscenity, a theatrical figure like Don Giovanni has an even harder time being understood and being staged. Superficial proximity leads to misunderstandings difficult to resolve. Compared to your average pornographic fornicator of the 21st century, Don Giovanni is a romantic hero of metaphysical dimensions. Søren Kierkegaard understood him as a primal force, related to Eros or Dionysus. The freedom that Giovanni craves has nothing to do with the bourgeois ethos of liberty and the bourgeois liberal waywardness of our days – they are only marginally related. His desire is to be unfettered, unlimited. This contrasts with a world of strict categories and order, of unbridgeable differences of class and rank, of morals and religion – a world whose mechanisms of repression only become visible through the encounter with Giovanni."
