Exhibition Opening | Austrian traditional Costumes through the Ages | Tostmann | Lena Hoschek | Azra Aksamija.
This year the famous movie "The Sound of Music" which plays an important role in Austrian awareness in the US as in other countries, celebrates its 50 birthday. Due to this occasion the Austrian Cultural Forum organized various events to provide a closer look at the Austrian Tracht.
Our Exhibition - Austrian Traditional Costumes through the Ages - is a unique opportunity to get an insight in the colorful, rich masterpieces of Austrian Drindl and Tracht. The Austrian Cultural Forum proudly presents handcrafted costumes of the famous Austrian Manufactory Tostmann and the newest creations of Lena Hoschek a new Austrian world famous designer. She is one more reason why Tracht, which was sometimes not well seen and often named old-fashioned, is nowadays celebrating a huge comeback especially by young people and fashionistas. Her extravagant creations illustrate the crossover between fashion and history. Another reinterpretation comes from Azra Aksamija. She created a Dirndlmoschee which is the nomadic principle of assimilating certain characteristics of a place into one’s own context, whereas a mutual enrichment is achieved. It can be transformed into an Islamic prayer environment that provides a prayer space for three people
With this exhibition the change of the traditional Austrian Tracht through the last decades and its variety of fabrics, occasions and designs is presented. As society transforms also the Austrian Tracht is adapting to these changes.
