April 28, 2015 | CONCERT & PLAYLET | POST CLASSICAL ENSEMBLE | A MAHLER PORTRAIT: THE INNER WORKINGS OF A MUSICAL GENIUS

A multimedia program featuring PostClassical Ensemble, conducted by Angel Gil-Ordóñez, with baritone soloist Christòpheren Nomura in “Songs of a Wayfarer” and the “Abschied” from “The Song of the Earth,” plus a playlet written by PCE Executive Director Joe Horowitz about the marriage of Gustav and Alma Mahler, featuring Sasha Olinick and Laura C. Harris.
A composer’s music will always bear some relationship to his personal life. Mahler furnishes and exceptional case study. How did Mahler’s anguished marginality, and his controversial marriage, infiltrate his music?
This comprises two musical selections with the 25-minute Playlet "I Beg You To Be Truthful" in between. The Playlet, with two actors (Sasha Olinick as Gustav and Laura Harris as Alma), was created by PCE Executive Director Joe Horowitz and premiered on the West Coast. It uses letters and diary entries to tell the story of a controversial and nearly disastrous marriage.
The music juxtaposes early Mahler – “The Songs of a Wayfarer” – with late Mahler – the “Farewell” from “The Song of the Earth.” Both sung by baritone Chris Nomura (a Mahler specialist) with PCE conducted by Angel Gil-Ordonez.
This event will last 90 minutes with no intermission, followed by discussion with the audience.
