Stefan Tiefengraber | Sound Scene 2023

  • Hirshhorn Museum Washington, DC, 20597 United States (map)

The ACF DC is proud to support the Austrian sound artist Stefan Tiefengraber who is presenting his latest sound-performance project DOWM at the Sound Scene Fest 2023. Three walkmans, three effect pedals, two mixers, a mini-synthesizer, microphones and several feedback loops create a noise-scape that ends in silence and emptiness. In this project, Tiefengraber refers to his artistic method of working, which he implements not only in performances but also in his installation projects. He extends the predefined functions of the used devices by experimenting with them and using unconventional applications. With that he achieves new and unpredictable results. Join Stefan for a workshop in the Hirshhorn Museum on Saturday, June 3 at 11:00am (sold out) and for a performance on Sunday, June 4 at 2:00pm followed by a workshop (please register here).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Stefan Tiefengraber lives and works in Linz, Austria. His work ranges from kinetic sound installations and interactive installations to audio-video noiseperformances. Tiefengraber experiments with the modification of devices, which are originally manufactured for different purposes. Combined with the perception of the audience, this experimental attempt of exploring old and new materials leads him to new and unpredictable results.  Since 2016 he is organizer of sound art concerts and co-founder of Tresor Linz, and since 2020 Jury member of the Prix Ars Electronica. 2021 he received the Excellence Award of the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival. Tiefengrabers’s work was shown at Japan Media Arts Festival 2021 (Tokyo/Japan), Galerie gerken (Berlin/Germany), Ars Electronica Festival (Linz/Austria), TodaysArt 2014 (Den Haag/Netherlands), New Media Gallery (Vancouver/Canada), 16th Media Art Biennale WRO 2015 (Wroclaw/Poland), Blaues Rauschen (Bochum/Germany), and many more.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Sound Scene is an annual, free and interactive audio arts festival organized by the DC Listening Lounge, an audio collective of Washington DC based sound artists and enthusiasts. Sound Scene celebrates sound through audio art installations, live performances of dance, music, and spoken word, or small group workshops. Since 2016, Sound Scene has been hosted by the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and is presented as a two-day full museum takeover.
